3 Tools to Help You Find the Best Neurosurgeon for You

February 12, 2018 by Dr. Taghva

find a neurosurgeon

Did you know that, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, approximately 80% of adults will experience back pain during their lifetime. And any kind of severe neurological problem such as back pain typically requires medical attention.

Similar to back pain, several other painful neurological problems will eventually need to be examined by a medical professional. Things like brain tumors, a bulging disc, or spinal injuries are all examples of conditions that should be looked at by a neurosurgeon. But how do you find a neurosurgeon near you? You want to make sure that you can trust the person that will perform your brain surgery or fuse lower back vertebrae for you.

To ensure you’re in safe hands, here are three great tips on how to find the neurosurgeon that is best for you.

Reviews and Referrals

One of the best ways to learn about a neurosurgeon, or any business for that matter, is through other patients’ opinions. Ask around to your close family and friends if they have ever needed neurological work done before, and if they have a doctor they would recommend. Your primary care doctor can also be a very knowledgeable source for referring a neurologist. Many medical professionals also have reviews available online so that you can read about the experience of previously treated patients.

Insurance

The truth is, not just anyone can become a neurosurgeon. This is an elite specialty, and these physicians have spent more than a decade training to treat patients neurological problems. And while that doesn’t mean you should blindly trust any doctor you encounter, it does mean that you will be in safe hands with most neurosurgeons. That’s why your insurance company may also be an excellent source of information. Not only can they steer you to a qualified doctor, but they can also help you find a doctor that won’t completely break the bank.

Credentials and Certifications

Board certification is one of the most important factors to consider when you are looking for a neurosurgeon, according to Health Grades, Inc. Certifications tell patients that the medical professional has the necessary skills and training to successfully provide treatment. It is not advised to allow a neurosurgeon that is unlicensed to provide any kind of medical attention.

Needing medical attention can be nerve wracking, especially problems of neurological nature. Ease your worries by knowing you are in good hands, and remember these three tips when you need to find a neurosurgeon near you.

  • Dr. Taghva is my hero. I had a herniated disc and spinal stenosis with pressure on the upper spine area. After 3 hours of surgery I was up and walking pain free right away. My recovery in just 2-3 weeks had me walking without any walker or back brace and I am feeling terrific.

    Thank you…

  • 5 years ago I was sent to Dr. Taghva by my pain management specialist. He had very thorough tests done. He told me that it was his opinion that I had RSD aka CRPS. After much discussion with my pain specialist, I had a spinal cord stimulator implanted. I loved the relief it gave me.
